Missionary life gets busier each week as we learn more about how to do the work. Our success is supported by all the years of problem solving in family and at the lodge. We are slow to make judgments and try to be careful in our observations. We find that most of the information we have been given about the Chuukese Saints is very biased and negative, and not true. They have been made to be very dependant, which is interpreted as them being beggars. They are severely lacking in self confidence. The branch Priesthood leaders hesitate to visit their members because they don’t know what to say. It’s like the first few months of a mission when the new missionary is worried about making mistakes and feels very insecure.
I went to Romanum with Facility Maintenance to show them how to hang FRP in the shower they are repairing in the Elders’ Quarters. They didn’t put any on the ceiling and are using ¼” round with caulking on the inside corners so it was easier that what we have done at the lodge. Also, in the warmer temperatures the glue gets sticky much faster. Going over the water was fine because we were going with the waves but coming back the wind had picked up and the water was rough. The FM (Facilities Maintenance) boat is an open fiberglass about 23 feet long and is powered by a 2-stroke 90 hp Yamaha. It slaps hard in 3-4 foot waves.
