Fishing
Update
August 22-28, 2010
The first day this week was a little bumpy on the water. Most boats fished in the inlet until early afternoon. The rest of the week was spectacular water weather and we even saw a couple of partly cloudy days…all with not much wind. The temperatures are turning into fall but the mountains here are still not showing any color. All in all we had a great weather week fishing.
On Wednesday a 185 pound halibut was taken from Black Rock. The halibut were a little bit more elusive this week but that is mostly a function of the tides and how much time people spent chasing salmon. This coming week the tides moderate but the silvers are jumping so the halibut catch, even though the fish are still abundant, may not improve.
The Coho run continues but I would characterize it as slow and steady. Boats were bringing in up to 12 nice looking fish a day but there were periods of slow and periods of action. The silvers continue to be large, 14 to 16 pounds, and many great pictures were taken this week. Fish this large provide a great fight but can be tough on the tackle. They test the skills of the angler.
A note on registration for next year: You can save money 2 ways by registering for 2011 before the end of October. First, you can take advantage of the annual low fares Alaska Airlines offers in late October to correspond with the payment of the Alaska Permanent Fund dividends to Alaska residents. Second, you can get reservation to arrive on Sunday and return home on Saturday and save the lodging costs of having to stay overnight in Juneau because you couldn’t get airline reservations.
