Fishing
Update
August 2 - 7, 2010
The weather continued to be moderate with light winds and not much rain. We did have a lot of fog several days which made finding the fishing spots interesting. Some who went to the Adolphus area disappeared into the fog about 9:00 AM and didn't reappear until late afternoon. The fish didn't seem to mind the fog and the sea birds were flying. I couldn't decide what they used for a compass to tell them what direction to fly.
Salmon fishing continued to be good but not great. More silvers are coming into the catch and we did give our one 18-pound pin to a young man for catching a large silver. By late in the week the number of pinks and silvers in the catch were about even. A couple of days the weather was warm and mostly sunny which usually results in lower salmon catches and that was the case this week. Large numbers of pinks are schooled in front of the beach at the lodge and they provide some active after-dinner activity. They started into the stream over the weekend and most that are caught are released because they are past the point of their meat being a good quality.
Halibut fishing remains great. It still requires some hunting and sometimes a lot of patience but the fish are there. They appear to be in schools because when the bit starts several poles will get strikes at about the same time. Plenty of 40- to 80-pound fish still being caught.
The real highlight of the week was when on of the boats from up the inlet brought a shark to the dock for us to fillet and package. We had to go to the internet to key it out because it was so much larger than anything we have ever seen in the area. It was a 340-pound salmon shark. That size Salmon Shark are usually caught in the Gulf of Alaska and not in inside waters.
