Fishing
Update
August 16-20, 2010
The summer continues to be interesting in terms of weather. Generally the winds have been favorable with no big storms, so no lost days to fishing. Only on Monday were the guests challenged by rough waters which made trolling at the Grey Cabin area somewhat difficult. The rest of the week was light and variable with moderate tides. If that sounds like the formula for good fishing—it was.
Halibut catches continued to be strong with fish over 100 pounds taken on three of the five days. Two of those days several were taken, and from different locations ranging from Mary’s to Green Buoy to the Inlet. The fish are spread out everywhere but you have to be willing to do some hunting for them. Some days, guests would fish most of the day for halibut and only bring in a few small ones. The next day, they would limit out in the morning and spend the rest of the day chasing salmon. It continues to be an excellent halibut year all things considered. The story of the week for halibut was the strike that broke the pole holder and resulted in the loss of the pole, reel, and fish.
The salmon are coming through in waves. Surprisingly there are still a lot of big pinks coming in that are bright and in good shape. But the thrills of the week are the size of the silvers. Not really abundant, although some boats did limit on several days, and obviously in schools, but when the bite comes on the thrills are tremendous. Regularly the guests caught silvers weighing 15 pounds with several 18’s and one 20 pounder caught. When silvers get this big the stories of the ones that got away multiply dramatically. One guest talked about the big silver breaking their line and then swimming by the boat dragging their flasher. The guest boat tried to net the escaped fish but didn’t succeed. Even a seagull trailed the fish wondering what that bright flashing thing was that was following it.
