Fishing Update
July 26 - 30, 2010

It was a great week for fishing at Doc Warner’s. The weather was mild, the winds light and variable, and the temperatures in the comfortable 60’s during the day. The salmon fishing continued good with the ratio of pinks to silvers changing from predominantly pinks to closer to a 50-50 ratio. As stated before, all the fish runs have been later this year but the runs have been good. We anticipate the silver run to continue strengthening this coming week.

Halibut fishing was great but fewer large fish than the previous week. More of our guests were finding halibut in shallower waters along shorelines and in coves. Much of the fishing was done closer to the lodge with fewer boats going out to the Point Adolphus area. Fish in the 40 to 60 pound range are still being caught on a regular basis.

We had higher tides this past week and that limited somewhat the catch of halibut, and because guests were having fun catching salmon the fishing time on halibut was reduced. However, the average take-home weight of fillets remained consistent with previous weeks.

Mark Warner and Dee Purrington are learning their duties as the new lodge management team. Mark is moving his family to Juneau this fall to be closer to the work at the lodge. A major goal will to be get hydropower into the lodge—a several year project.
