Fishing
Updates
July 5, 2009
Last year in July if you were to tell me that we would be sitting on the edge of the boat with our feet in the water while fishing for halibut to stay cooled off in 2009, I would have told you that you were out of your mind. I can not explain or begin to offer an explanation as to how nice, perfect, outstanding the weather has been. This whole week has been in the 80s with nice calm water.
Doc Warner’s Chase boat team; “Chase Boat Mark” & “Eric the Elk Hunter” have been doing everything they can to stay out of the sun. Mark has a nice big sun hat that does the job quite nicely. Eric being a “Chee-cha-ko” green horn has not yet figured out the importance or value of a good hat, so you will see him out there with one of those “nice clean” boat rags under his hat trying to keep the sun off of his neck. This week both Mark and Eric have had chances to wet a line. Eric being polite went away from the guests to fish for a second, he had a hard time hiding the evidence, he landed a 110 lb halibut caught in 56 feet of water.
The salmon are getting better each day. It is starting to cause some pretty serious discussions around the dinner tables as what to go for the next day. There are so many big halibut coming in that a lot of fishermen are heading for the halibut grounds to try their luck, but the salmon are so easy to catch right now it is hard to decide.
At the beginning of the year we had hopes of producing an outdoor show on the docwarners.com website. We have been so busy catching fish, we are yet to see our first show, it has been put on the back burner for a bit. For now we will leave it to the professionals.
One thing you should consider when planning your fishing trip to Alaska. Do not under any circumstances promise someone or some group that you will supply fish for them upon your arrival back home. You will have a much more enjoyable trip if you go fishing because you want to rather than because you feel the pressure of providing fish for the entire neighborhood.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on the fishing reports from the State of Alaska.
