Fishing Updates
July 19, 2009

At last we finally saw the weather we are familiar with.  This week was filled with showers and at times rain.  The road from the beach is muddy.  We also saw a few windy days this week.  The wind limited the guests to fishing a bit closer to the lodge.

Pink salmon are showing up in big numbers this week.  You can see them jumping all through Icy Strait.  We are starting to catch them consistently off the dock.  For those fishing next week, you will need to learn the difference between a bright silvery pink and the ones that we call water marked.  The water marked ones have been in the mouth of the stream and have begun to rot from the inside out and need to be released.

16 lb Silver was the biggest for the week.  We saw more silvers last week than this week.  I think that is a direct correlation to how many pinks are in the water, there are just so many pinks they outnumber the silvers at this point.  That should change soon as the pinks start to enter the streams.

Halibut were slower this week, due to the wind and the areas we were able to fish.  On Monday one of the guests reported a huge halibut along side their boat, but it was not hooked very well and got away before they were able to land it.  There is a rumor in the area of a 94 inch halibut caught and released.  That would be bigger than the state record of 459 lbs.  Friday was our best day for halibut; we had several nice fish brought in.  Maybe the big tides are bringing the fish in?

A reminder; for those that have not filled out the release and indemnification form.  On Monday those that filled the forms out correctly are allowed to go fishing early while those that have not get to sit on the dock for approx 2 hours while we process your paper work!  Yes I am just joking, but please if you have not filled out your forms, will you do so before you travel to Alaska?

Chase Boat Mark is writing a short book titled; “Why We Don’t Fish With Rebar”.  As you are on the water ask him about it, it’s pretty entertaining.
