Fishing
Updates
June 28, 2009
Many of the guests this week were experiencing their first trip to Doc Warner’s. It was a lot of fun to see them come in on Sunday and be so eager to learn all the different techniques for fishing for halibut and salmon, it was even more fun to see them experience the fruits of their labors and catch so many fish.
Weather was again near perfect. We experienced very little rain, no wind to speak of except for a couple of afternoons. The Pink and Chum salmon continue to be easy to find along the grey cabin and log dump areas. Halibut fishing was great; we had several big fish caught, one of them was in less than 60 feet of water. A new lure we have in the store has two halibut hooks, and this week there was a report of two 36 inch halibut getting hooked at the same time; I would guess that was pretty entertaining to see the two of them come up from the bottom.
One of our staff this week caught a 30 lb King. The fish was hooked on the dorsal fin, talk about a hard fish to land.
Just a reminder about checked baggage at the airport; rates are going up on July 7th for checked baggage. Check with your air line to determine the new charges. Dee at the lodge is in charge of fish processing, she can tell you daily what your total box count and fillet weight will be, this will help in planning for your exit out of Juneau through the airport.
If our weather continues to be warm and sunny, you will need to bring extra sunscreen, the forecast for the coming week is in the high 70s with no rain.
