Fishing Updates
June 21, 2009

Remember the young eagle that ran into the piling on the dock?  I have good news to report, they are learning very quickly.  Last night they were attacking a ball of herring right next to the dock.  The adults were there with the young ones, it was quite the scene to see those big birds come down with talons outstretched and snatch a fish out of the water.

Kings were slower this week.  I think the main reason is due to the number of Pinks and Chums in the area.  We are seeing limits of Pinks and Chums at the dock, and  an occasional nice Silver.  Biggest halibut for the week was 130 lbs, and it was taken at Mary’s Flat, 2nd biggest was 128 lb taken up Excursion Inlet.  The fisherman that caught one of the big halibut this week said, “I have shot elk, deer, and enough bear to cover my living room as carpet, but I think reeling in and landing that halibut tops them all.”

Weather was ok this week, not great, we had strong currents and some breezy weather, which resulted in some bumpy traveling at times.  It seems as though the drought is over, we have now settled into our normal weather, the temps are in the 50s and it is overcast and raining with more regularity.

Horst’s Alaskan Seafood is still the place to get your salmon smoked.  Doc Warner’s guests are now sending salmon in to Juneau in the middle of the week and picking it up at Horst’s on Saturday morning on their way home from fishing.  Horst also makes wall mounts of King Crab, when you visit the lodge this summer take a look at the one hanging in Harris Hall.
