Fishing
Updates
April 2009
We enjoyed visiting with many of you who visited with us at the sports shows this spring. It is a highlight for us to talk with each of you, relive past trips and make plans for this summer. Thank you also to all of those that have signed up to come fishing this summer, we look forward to watching you catch the big one!
As the weather warms up I find that I am more than ready to leave the city life behind, and head for Excursion Inlet. Dreams of big fish and the gentle rocking of a boat are once again luring me to the land northward. Brett, our mechanic, and I plan to drive to Prince Rupert, BC and then take the Alaska Ferry system to Juneau., the trip will take a little over 5 days. We will begin this summer’s adventure the end of April.
We recently got the fishing forecast for 2009 from the Alaska Fish and Game, the entire report is available at http://www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/FedAidPDFs/sp09-07.pdf. According to the forecast, I expect the following for our fishing area: Chinook (Kings): Numbers greater than the past two years. Limits will be one King 28 inches or longer a day and a season limit of 3 per day. Coho (Silvers): are forecasted to be comparable to the 2007 season. Halibut, the Fish and Game do not forecast halibut, it has been good fishing for so long and I do not see that changing this year.
This winter has been a snowy one for Southeast Alaska, on April 1st the snow total for Juneau was 173.5 inches. The snowiest winter on record happened in 2006-2007, 197.8 inches of snow fell at the airport.
