Fishing
Updates
August 10-16
This past winter we kicked around the idea of getting a windmill to generate power. The idea was put to rest for a lack of consistent wind speed in Icy Strait. On Wednesday we could have powered a lot of homes with electricity if we had a few windmills. We saw winds in excess of 30 mph. I saw my first water spout; it started out in front of the Porpoise Islands.
Homeshore was still fishable during the wind storm, but it was pretty bumpy traveling to and from. Thursday and Friday the weather was much better, winds were calm and the fishing improved a great deal. For the first time Silvers were almost even with Pinks in numbers on the filet table.
It seems like every year a big halibut is caught around this time of year. On Friday our east coast group, brought back to the dock a 167 lb halibut; biggest one for the year! Last year it was on Aug 19th when a 276 lb was landed.
With the Silvers being low in numbers it seems as though the whales, sea lions, and eagles are getting more attention. Our daylight hours are starting to shrink, darkness falls at 9:15PM and it does not get light enough to fish until 5:30AM.
