Fishing Updates

June 5, 2007

This was our first week with full staff and was a training week.  We only had three guests so the catch data only represents fish taken primarily by staff fishing just parts of days.

The weather was cold and rainy during the early part of the week and fishing was confined mostly to halibut.  Late in the week the skies cleared and a bright light appeared and turned our skin red if we spent too much time under its influence.  The small halibut were plentiful in all the areas we fishing which is a good sign as far as having plenty of fish to catch.  It’s still early for the bigger fish but we did land a 103-pounder and two fish in the 60-pound range.  We landed and released many fish in the 30 to 34 inch range.  The new halibut harvest regulations for Charter Boats in Southeast Alaska in 2007 allow 2 fish per day and only one of those can be over 32 inches.  This will keep us more conscience of small fish size this year.

On Thursday we picked up our first salmon, a 10-pound chum.  We had not seen any evidence of kings  and the Charter Boats are going outside to find them.  Yesterday (June 8), we found some large bait balls in the Windy Creek area and fished them.  Much to our delight we found a large school of chum salmon.  We landed 16 chums and one 27 pound king.  Staff went back early this morning and found the bait balls again but they didn’t catch any salmon.

The lodge is clean, the staff is being trained, the fish are showing about on time, the boats and motors are outfitted and tuned, the aroma of great cooking fills the lodge, so all that’s missing is you.
