Fishing Updates

July 2, 2006

Finally the halibut are here.  This past week we found schools of halibut weighing from 20 to 40 pounds, plus there were numerous fish in the 50 and 60 pound range.  Our biggest halibut was 155 pounds.  The average take-home per guest reflects the increase in halibut.  It jumped 20 pounds over the previous week.  We got into the halibut on Tuesday and found them in many areas by the end of the week.

Sunshine early in the week reduced the salmon catch.  On Monday salmon fishing was good, but dropped off quickly on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The clouds returned on Thursday and so did the salmon.

The king catch dropped to just 8 fish for the week and we expect this run is over for 2006.  The silver catch dropped to 1/3 the previous week.  Chum catch dropped slightly and pinks increased about 20%.  Halibut numbers were about the same, just larger fish.  By Friday there were lots of fishing jumping so we knew the runs were starting again.  Indications are strong that this will be a good salmon and halibut season.
