Fishing Updates

June 19 , 2006

Fishing improved over the previous week though the salmon runs are still very small.  We saw lots of chums jumping and took 13 for the week.  We also took 5 kings, 6 silvers, and 10 pinks.  I'm not sure why the salmon runs are so small but suspect it's because this spring has been so cold and the water temperatures are still running about 4 degrees colder than usual.

The schools of herring are large and numerous which is a good sign.  We see lots of whales feeding, and plenty of bait balls to troll through in hopes of catching salmon.

Halibut fishing has stayed steady all year.  We saw more big fish this week with several in the 70's and 80's.  We have one taken that weighed 110 pounds and another at 145 pounds.  We have had a couple of commercial halibut boats fishing for two weeks in some of our favorite halibut fishing areas and that has hurt our catches.  They are gone so we should seeing migrating fish fill the voids created by the commercial boats.

Lots of nice comments from guests about the new halibut rods and reels.  Smooth action and consistent drag control.  Much better than the old reels.
