Fishing
Updates
August 21-27, 2005
Two things stand out for this past weeks' fishing. When the
wind blows hard the halibut catch goes down. Our guests only
averaged catching 3.2 halibut for the week and that was because
the water was rough, not because the halibut were not there.
The waves were just the right height to allow you to still fish,
but the bouncing motion kept pulling your anchor loose. Early
in the week we had large tides which compounded the halibut fishing
problem. Still, when you did get your anchor to hold, the fishing
was good and the size of the fish were nice.
No kings, but the chum catch jumped to 13 fish which was double
the previous week.
There were still lots of pink being caught but most of them
were released. Near the mouth of the local area streams most
of the pink salmon have colored up and their meat has begun to
deteriorate so these fish were not harvested.
Silver fishing was the bright spot for the week. While the water
was too rough to allow good halibut fishing several days during
the week, that was not the case with the silver fishing. The
catch jumped from 628 the previous week to 909 this past week.
The fish were obviously in large migrating schools and fishing
would be great one day, then be slow the next. That is quite
typical for silver fishing. The average size of the fish was
larger than the previous week, but there are not as many big
fish as in the last few years.
