Fishing
Updates
August 14 - 20, 2005
This time of year you can almost determine the weather by looking
at the catches on the various days. Basically, our weather
is staying slightly warmer than usual and we have one or two
days each week that the water is too rough to fish in the open
areas. An example: the first three days of last week our
guests average about 150 total halibut each day. On Thursday
the catch for the day dropped to 26 halibut. The previous
week the catch on Monday was 57 halibut and the average
of each of the next three days was about 150 halibut. Which
days were windy?
The halibut catch is staying quite level and for the second
week in a row we are finding more fish in the 50-80 pound range. We
had three fish over 100 pounds. Based on the reports of
missed fish, fish that were lost along the side of the boat,
there are lots of nice sized fish in the area now.
The Pink salmon harvest dropped about 50% from the previous
week. The fish are still stacked up in the saltwater in
front of the lodge and providing great after dinner fun. Most
of the fish caught in open saltwater are bright and the meat
is still very edible. The pink run should end this coming
week except for a few stragglers.
We had one legal king and 7 chums for the week.
Later in the week we had a surge in the number of silver salmon
being caught. The number of silvers jumped from 370
a week ago to 628 this past week. We gave trophy pins for
2 18-pound fish. One of our staff caught a 19 pounder on
Saturday so the bigger fish seem to be coming. Hopefully
the runs will stay steady for the rest of the season and we'll
all have lots of thrills from the strikes, fighting, and landing
of plenty of silvers.
A reminder that first payments for the 2006 season are due next
week on September 1.
If you haven't register for either 2006 or 2007 you should do
so now. Many weeks are already at capacity.
