Fishing
Update
July 31-August 6, 2011
This week's big news was the tide swings and their effect on the fishing. Large tide swings create strong current as a result our guests were able to fish in shallower waters and catch fish without having to pull them up from great depths. We also found a few new places to catch halibut. The eddies created by the current stirred up the bait and created some feeding frenzies.
The Pink Salmon are now in the stream at the side of the lodge and the Silver Salmon have arrived. On Monday this week there was a commercial seine fishing opening in the inlet and along Home Shore. In normal years this decreases the fishing but not this year. Because of the large numbers of Pink Salmon this year, it has been more difficult to catch Silver Salmon because of the competition. The seine fisherman took care of this problem by thinning out the Pink Salmon. As a result, the Silver Salmon fishing has improved.
Early this week we had a storm move through. It rained hard on Wednesday and one might have felt that their bilge wasn't working. Thursday the weather improved and Friday was partly cloudy, placid waters, and the fishing was the best. All things considered, it was a great ending to the week.
